Woman struck and killed on I-55 while assisting other motorists

(KMOV.com) -- An investigation is being conducted after a woman was struck and killed on Interstate 55 early Friday morning near Route 203 in St. Clair County.

Police said and initial investigation revealed that a prior traffic crash involving a car and tractor trailer had occurred at that Illinois location.  The victim and her husband stopped their vehicle on the shoulder to see if they could assist.  When the victim exited her vehicle, she was struck by an orange, 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier that was heading north.

The victim has been identified as Polly Cottrell, 52, from Bull Shoals, Arkansas.  Cottrell was transferred from the scene to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Illinois where she was later pronounced dead.

The couple had been in the area after staying in St. Louis Thursday night while they were in route to visit family in Rockford, Illinois.

The Illinois State Police continue to investigate this incident.  An autopsy is planned for a later date to aid in the investigation process.  Routine toxicology testing will be performed.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
