Police: Men impersonating Ameren workers stole from Godfrey woman

(KMOV.com) – Police said a woman’s purse was stolen by two men who impersonated Ameren employees.

Police said the incident occurred just before 4 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Godfrey.  According to authorities, a woman was greeted at the front door by someone claiming to be from Ameren who said he was there to check her gas meter.

Police said the woman then escorted the man to her gas meter and then noticed a second man sitting in a car parked in front of her home. The woman became suspicious and asked the second man for credentials. Police said he was unable to prove he was from Ameren.

According to authorities, the woman then went back inside her house and discovered her purse and other items had gone missing. Police believe the items were taken by the second suspect while the first suspect was inspecting the gas meter.

Authorities said the two men were driving a dark colored vehicle.  Police describe the first suspect as a white man, with strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, standing five feet eight inches tall with a medium build, and a tattoo reading “LOVE” across the knuckles of one hand. Police believe he is in his twenties or thirties.

They describe the second suspect as a white male who was wearing a ball cap. Anyone with information should contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at (618) 296-3000.
