(KMOV) -- News 4 has learned that a controversial police chief who was just fired from one north county town has now been hired by another.

Pine Lawn city leaders still have not given a reason why they terminated long-time chief Rickey Collins last week

Now the Mayor of Wellston has created a position for Collins.

“I guess he is appointed by the mayor, yet to be approved by council,” said Mayor Pro-tem and councilmember Samuel Shannon.

On Tuesday, Shannon Collins was already on the job at the Wellston Police Department, despite the fact he’s not even commissioned as a police officer there.

The Mayor appointed him assistant chief and gave him the rank of Major, which reportedly didn’t exist in this department before.

“There are many questions be asked and many concerns,” said Shannon.

Why Collins was fired from his last post is a mystery. News 4 has filed a Sunshine Law request, but so far haven’t heard back.

Council members tell News 4 they need to know. They’re concerned already about Collins’ controversial past. In 2006, for example, he accidentally shot a driver during a DUI checkpoint.

“We don’t want this controversy to tarnish the city of Wellston,” said Shannon.

News 4’s Lauren Trager went to city hall to talk to Mayor Linda Whitfield, she wasn’t there. She didn’t return our calls.

We even went to her home, but she didn’t answer.

“We’ve had controversy with different police officers in the past and we just don’t need it again in the city,” said Shannon.

The council meets Wednesday night. News 4 will continue to stay on top of this developing controversy in Wellston.
