CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Multiple people are dead following a shooting Thursday at a home in the southeast Missouri town of Cape Girardeau, authorities said.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton declined to say how many people were killed or offer any details of the shooting, which happened around 8 a.m. Messages left by The Associated Press with police were not immediately returned.
Clifton would say only that there were “multiple” deaths and that the shooting occurred at a house.
The Southeast Missourian newspaper in Cape Girardeau reported that several people were outside the stately brick home on a spacious lot, embracing and crying. At least a half-dozen police cars were at the property.
Police spokesman Darin Hickey said everyone involved in the shooting was accounted for and there was no danger to the public. Hickey declined to elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation.
“We’re trying to determine what the actual occurrences were,” Hickey said.
Cape Girardeau, a town of about 40,000 residents, is roughly 100 miles south of St. Louis.
