PERCY, Ill. -- A newspaper reports that police believe a motorist didn’t have a driver’s license at the time he hit and killed a 5-year-old boy in southern Illinois.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinois reports that authorities have ticketed 40-year-old Jose Gustavo Jimenez Lara with not having a valid driver’s license during last Friday’s accident in Percy.
Investigators say Lara told them he was dropping off a co-worker Friday afternoon, and that he didn’t realize he had hit Ithan Paez until he looked at his side-view mirror and saw the boy on the road.
Authorities say Lara tried to give emergency aid to the boy, who later died at a hospital.
Lara doesn’t have a listed home telephone number and couldn’t be reached Tuesday.
