(KMOV.com) -- Boy Scouts from across the St. Louis area paid tribute to veterans on Sunday, placing American flags next to nearly 200,000 headstones at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Adult Scouter Robert Mitchell talked about the meaning behind the tradition.

"All of these people died so we could live a peaceful life and a great life in a free country," said Mitchell. "And my grandfather is buried here, so that's one of the greatest things you can do to honor him, and not only him but everyone else (here)."
