EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill.—An East St. Louis police detective facing federal charges that he plotted to distribute cocaine while on the police force has resigned.

Police Chief Michael Floore tells the Belleville News-Democrat that 41-year-old Orlando Ward stepped down after a dozen years on the police force.

Ward has pleaded not guilty to charges filed earlier this month that he conspired to distribute at least five kilograms of cocaine. A federal prosecutor has described Ward in court as a corrupt cop who for $5,000 a month was willing to provide information, police protection and resources to the drug conspiracy.

Six others are charged.

Ward remains jailed without bond. His trial tentatively is set for July 8.
