Wainwright picks up Cards in win over Padres

(BaseballStL) -- Adam Wainwright ended a five-game win streak the San Diego Padres held at home over the St. Louis Cardinals in a 10-2 win on Tuesday.

Wainwright entered the game in the top ten in the National League in wins (5), earned run average (2.51), innings pitched (64.2) and strikeouts (63). All of those numbers would improve after hurling 100 pitches, including 67 strikes, through 7.1 innings.

Wainwright allowed an early lead to the Padres in the second inning after Alexi Amarista grounded into a double play which allowed second baseman Jedd Gyorko to score from third base. That would be the only threat to Wainwright, who won his sixth game of the season.

He allowed only the one run on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts to the 25 batters faced.

The win marked his first in his career at Petco Park, one of two NL stadiums he had never posted a win prior to Tuesday. It was also his ninth quality start in ten starts this season.

The deep start may be crucial for the Cardinals in an effort to give the bullpen a much-needed rest, especially with a rookie pitcher starting on Wednesday. Tyler Lyons will get the nod with Jaime Garcia out with a shoulder injury.
