St. Louis hosts international chess tournament

ST. LOUIS -- Four of the world’s top chess players are in St. Louis this week for a $170,000 invitational tournament bankrolled by prominent political donor Rex Sinquefield.

The round-robin field of grandmasters includes world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway and top U.S. player Hikaru Nakamura of St. Louis. The tournament begins Monday afternoon at the Chess Club & Scholastic Center of St. Louis in the city’s Central West End and concludes on Sunday. The winner receives $70,000.

The billionaire Sinquefield is a retired investment firm executive best known for his efforts to promote school choice as well as a current campaign in the Missouri Legislature to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a state income tax cut. The tournament at the chess center he built is called the Sinquefield Cup.
