IDAHO FALLS -- The search for a missing 5-year-old believed to been kidnapped from Idaho and taken to Mexico is now entering its fourth day.
That's after the initial abduction was revealed on Facebook, according to the child's grandmother.
Authorities believe Aaliyah Alynn Esqueda, 5, was taken by her paternal grandparents on Wednesday from Idaho Falls. Aaliyah is cared for by her grandparents, Debra and Scott Yagues. The Yagues allow Aaliyah's father's parents, Irene and Salvador Esqueda visitation.
Debra Yagues says little Aaliyah was supposed to be returned to her home by 5 p.m. Sunday.
But that didn't happen.
Yagues tells KTVB she had been allowing Aaliyah paternal grandparents visitation rights with the child on Wednesday when she received the shocking news.
"I received a message on Facebook that they had packed up their stuff and left to Mexico with my granddaughter," Yagues said.
Yagues says she called her attorney, and then the police in Idaho Falls, who eventually issued an Amber Alert.
Authorities believe the three left Idaho Falls on Wednesday around 11:00 p.m. on a bus headed for Mexico.
KIDNAPPED TO MEXICO?
Yagues says members of Aaliyah paternal family have shared some details about the child's whereabouts, including the initial Facebook post detailing the kidnapping.
"I've heard that they did make it across the border," Yagues told KTVB. "The state of California will not issue an amber alert. I guess because she was not abducted by a stranger, which is very unnerving because they probably could have helped."
She reports the child's father had been deported to Mexico, and says she believes Aaliyah's paternal grandparents have taken her in an attempt to rejoin the two.
Debbie Yagues is now asking friends and neighbors to help spread the word about the 5-year-old's disappearance, and call the Idaho Falls police with any information about the case.
Calls to the Idaho Falls Police Department and FBI bureau in Salt Lake City were not returned by the time this article was written.
