(FootballStL) -- The Rams announced their captains for the upcoming season Thursday in Earth City, a process that saw all 53 players on the roster vote for someone on offense, someone on defense and someone on special teams.

Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis carried the defensive vote, safety Rodney McLeod got the nod on special teams while quarterback Sam Bradford and offensive tackle Jake Long were both selected on the offensive side.

Contrary to how some other teams do it, this is not a situation where guys are selected by the coach.

“You’re selected by your peers,” head coach Jeff Fisher said.  “Everyone got a chance to vote for all three phases.  There were some close races there.  You get a sense for who the players look up to, who they respect and who’s deserving of it.”

Those who were selected say this is a very big deal.

“I don’t take it for granted.  I think it’s a huge honor,” middle linebacker James Laurinaitis said.  “I try to prepare the hardest of anyone on the defense each and every week.  Probably because I have to since I’m the [middle linebacker].  If I make the wrong call [to my teammates during a game] that’s a reflection on me.  You can’t be a middle linebacker making the wrong calls because if the other ten guys aren’t 100% sure that you’re right, they’re going to start second guessing you.  We have some other great leaders.  Chris Long is a phenomenal leader.  Cortland Finnegan leads in his own way.  There’s a lot of leaders on this squad that I still look up to as well.  But I take the “C” on the chest very seriously.”

Those four players will, in addition to other duties as captain, go out for the coin toss at the start of each game.
