PALESTINE, Ill. -- Authorities say a prisoner who walked away from a work crew on Friday has been captured not far away.

Illinois Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer said Jared Carter was spotted by local police Tuesday afternoon as he walked down a street in Palestine in southeast Illinois. When stopped, Carter told police “I’m the guy you’re looking for.”

Carter escaped Friday while mowing at Robinson Correctional Center. The prison is 6 miles west of Palestine. The town is about 110 miles southeast of Champaign near the Illinois-Indiana state line.

Carter is serving time for burglary. State officials had said they didn’t think he was armed but said he struck a prison officer and could be dangerous.

Shaer said Carter last lived in Troy, about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis.
