(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals are sending pitcher Michael Wacha down to Springfield, one night after he pitched four shutout innings against the Reds with seven strikeouts. But the move is only temporary.

Wacha will no doubt be back with the Cardinals early next week when the Springfield (AA) season ends. He should be available to pitch in the series against Cincinnati, either as a starter or reliever.

The 22-year-old rookie is 2-0, 3.78 ERA in 10 games for the Cardinals and has struck out 37 batters in 33.1 innings pitched.

The Cardinals also sent Michael Blazek to Memphis (AAA) and called up reliever Sam Freeman. Blazek worked 1.2 scoreless innings in relief on Wednesday and has struck out 10 batters in 11 relief appearances for the Cardinals this season.

Freeman has appeared in four games for the Cardinals, striking out five batters and allowing no runs.

The Cardinals still have another move to make. Sending two pitchers down and calling up only one leaves them with an open spot on their 25 man roster.

The Cardinals can fill that spot internally, or by adding a player through the waiver process.
