(KMOV) – Get ready St. Louis-area residents: Today may be the hottest day of the year, according to News 4 Meteorologist Kent Ehrhardt.

Temperatures Monday morning started off in the mid-70s with warm and muggy conditions. But those numbers are expected to steadily rise throughout the morning, reaching a high of 99 degrees by the afternoon.

But it will feel even hotter than that when the heat index if factored in. A heat advisory remains in effect for the St. Louis Metro area until 7 p.m. Saturday.

The high temperatures in recent days have forced a number of school districts across the region to make changes to their schedules. Cooling centers have also remained open throughout the area.

Looking ahead, we may get some relief on Thursday as Ehrhardt forecasts a chance for rain.

“While it’s nice to see a rain chance tomorrow it comes at the price of higher humidity and, hence a higher heat index,” he said. “The chance for a p.m. storm is highest in our Illinois counties.”

At least some rain remains in the forecast at times through the holiday weekend. We’re expected to get a break in the heat after that.
