(KMOV.com) – The Post Dispatch reports that Shenandoah and Mann Elementary schools in south St. Louis will undergo renovations to stay open.

In 2009, it was recommended that the St. Louis City Public Schools close some of their buildings in favor of new ones.

Superintendent Kelvin Adams told the Post Dispatch that improving enrollment, academics and community support influenced the decision to keep the schools operating.

The renovation of the schools will include roof work, fixing floors, foundations and burglar alarms. The total cost of the renovation is estimated to cost $1.5 million. The district hopes the improvements will attract more students.

The school board will hold a vote to decide on construction packages and financial details.
