(KMOV) – Police believe the noise of broken light bulbs led to a report of shots fired inside Kirkwood High School Tuesday morning.

According to Kirkwood School District officials, police received reports of a shooting inside the school in the 800 block of W. Essex around 6 a.m. after a custodian heard a loud noise that sounded like a gun shot.

Police responded to the scene and searched the building for about two hours, which was placed on lockdown as authorities investigated. Police also blocked off all entrances to the school as a precaution.

According to police, officers found no evidence of shots fired and discovered halogen light bulbs in a janitor's closet that might have fallen and made a noise mistaken for gunfire

The lockdown was lifted around 7:45 a.m. and classes were set to resume at 8:50 a.m.

School officials intially diverted all buses and teachers to Dierbergs on Manchester Rd. All other schools within the district started on time.
