Penalties continue to plague Rams

(FootballStL) -- As if it’s not hard enough to win with a back-up quarterback and a struggling defense, the Rams also continue to shoot themselves in the foot with costly penalties. The Rams were flagged 11 times for 90 yards on Sunday in Arizona. They were also penalized 11 times the week before in the loss to the 49ers. That’s way too many flags.

“They’ve been up the last two weeks. They’re an issue,” said Jeff Fisher. “There’s a number of them that we’ve looked at, we’ve discussed it, that shouldn’t have been called. But still, nonetheless, they’re up. We had our first penalty in seven games in the return game, and that was disappointing.”

The Rams have drawn exactly 100 penalties through their first 13 games. Only Tampa Bay (106) and Seattle (104) have been penalized more. The Rams were second in the league in 2012 in penalties with 129. Only Baltimore had more (145). Somehow, the Ravens managed to win a Super Bowl as the league’s most penalized team. The Rams have had far less success in overcoming their mistakes.

“We’re just not making plays whether it’s a penalty or it’s a complete pass or it’s a missed tackle,” said Fisher. “We’re doing a lot of different things and we’re just not making the plays.”
