Nearly $1M worth of marijuana found in shipment of squash

NOGALES, Ariz. -- A Mexican national was arrested Monday at the Port of Nogales for attempting to smuggle nearly 1,900 pounds of marijuana into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred a 40-year-old resident of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, for an additional inspection of the Freightliner tractor-trailer he was driving into the Mariposa Commercial Facility.

A CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside the shipment of Mexican squash, according to officials. Officers found three pallets of marijuana worth close to $943,000.

The drugs and vehicle were processed for seizure. The driver was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
