(KMOV.com) – A Metro East woman is suing Alton Memorial Hospital after she says doctors there are to blame for her daughter’s death.
The suit was filed by Debra Thomas, who said her daughter Keshia Smith was constantly in and out of the hospital with lupus and auto-immune disorders.
Smith died December 8, 2011, one day after Thomas says she went to Alton Memorial with a sore throat, and they released her saying she had a virus.
The lawsuit, filed in Madison County, says the hospital and three doctors negligently and carelessly discharged her without properly treating a different disease that ultimately killed her.
The family is seeking $50,000 for each of the 14 counts in the lawsuit.
“It’s not about the money, it’s not about the money,” Thomas said. “It’s about how my daughter was treated.”
Thomas believes the hospital could have saved her daughter’s life. News 4 talked with a spokesman at Alton Memorial, who said the hospital will not comment on the suit and they haven’t yet been served.
