Wong has big night against Lohse, triple shy of cycle

(BaseballStL) – Kolten Wong was only 2 for 14 coming into Saturday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, but manage Mike Matheny had no problem running the second baseman out there for another night because of his numbers against Kyle Lohse.

And the manager was right.

Wong went 3 for 4 with his seventh homer of the season, 3 RBI and his 16th stolen base on the season, too. He was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

“That worked out alright for us,” Matheny said, “It’s nice to see him bounce back. The home run helped, it always helps the confidence.”

After the game, Wong was quick to point out he didn’t strike out once Saturday.

“I knew the reason why I was striking out [Friday] as soon as the game was over,” he said, “I was swinging too hard.”

Wong sent the first pitch he saw Saturday 408 feet into right center, it turned out to be the longest homer of his career.

“If that doesn’t wake you up,” Wong responded, “I don’t know what will.”
