ST. LOUIS, Mo. (BaseballSTL) -- The Cardinals on Friday announced they have optioned pitcher Carlos Martinez to AAA Memphis ahead of their series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Outfielder Shane Robinson was called up with the departure of Allen Craig.
Martinez, who went 2-4 with a 4.74 ERA in 38 season appearances, struggled in recent outings. And manager Mike Matheny said the young righty needs to sort some things out.
“He needs some consistency,” he said Friday, “I think there’s another level for him, more on the mental side and the preparation and the execution. It comes down to making good pitches in good situations.”
GM John Mozeliak said Martinez is going to Memphis to be a starter. He will not be in the bullpen down there.
“The reason we want him starting in Memphis is, he needs to get consistent work and I think it’s the easiest way to manage it down there,” Mozeliak said.
This is Robinson's fourth stint with the Cardinals this season and the outfielder was sad to be back in a clubhouse without his close friend Craig. He said they were in each other’s weddings.
“It’s good to be back, unfortunately losing a good friend, it’s not the way I would have like it to happen.”
The team also announced newly-acquired pitchers John Lackey and Justin Masterson were added to the 25-man active roster.
