(BaseballStL) – If the Cardinals and Red Sox leave their rotations as is, the Redbirds could face former teammate Joe Kelly Tuesday at Busch Stadium while the Cards would counter with John Lackey.

But it might have been Joe Kelly’s versatility, or rather uncertainty, that made his trade an easier decision for GM John Mozeliak as his role within the organization has changed numerous times.

In 2013, Kelly was originally put in the bullpen out of Spring Training, but injuries caused the Cardinals to pull Kelly back into the starting rotation. Then Kelly beat out Carlos Martinez in Spring Training for the fifth spot in the rotation, but an injury on April 16 sidelined the starter for nearly three months.

Regardless, the Cardinals will miss more than Joe Kelly’s arm. He was certainly a character among his teammates, even famously battling Scott Van Slyke during the 2013 NLCS anthem or dressing as an old man to interview St. Louis rapper Nelly.

And if Kelly does start Tuesday for the Red Sox, he’s almost certain to receive a generous ovation.
