(KMOV) – Police say they found four vehicles reported stolen from the City of St. Louis at a scrap lot in Wellston Thursday afternoon.
The cars were recovered at Scrap Solutions on Page and Sutter while officers were assisting the Department of Revenue with an inspection of the business. The owner of the scrap lot, Paul Thornton, told News 4 dozens of police officers surrounded his business.
Thornton called the raid a "misunderstanding." Thornton told News he could previously buy cars that were at least 10 years old without a title. However, police told him the law changed Wednesday. Under the new law, cars without a title must be at least 25 years old, and have to be scrapped.
Thornton said he has the ability to destroy the cars, but police do not agree. He said police did not handle the situation properly.
