St. Clair County, Ill. (KMOV) – Reduced speed limits and lane closures have been an ongoing problem on Interstate 64 in the Metro East but officials say the three part project should be done by the end of the year.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials said the $15.3 million project between Route 111 and 18th St. will make for a smoother commute when completed.

“We're replacing the worn out surface on the asphalt on the roads to make it a smoother drive for everybody, upgrading the guard rail, doing the necessary maintenance repairs of the bridges to extend their life and really just doing a general maintenance contract on a very large scale”, said Tom Borsch, IDOT Field Engineer.

The project is expected to be completed by October 31.
