Teen charged in shooting that critically injured 5-year-old girl

(KMOV) -- A teenager has been charged in a shooting involving a five-year-old girl.
 
Police say Deshawn Barnes, 17, is responsible for a a stray bullet that hit the girl in the neck.
           
This happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at 15th and Broadway in East St. Louis.
 
Police tell News 4 that the incident started when Barnes got into fight with someone in a car. At some point, Barnes got a gun from a nearby apartment and fired about five shots at the car. At that same time, two children and an adult walked out of a convenience store on the corner and a stray bullet hit the five-year-old. 
 
A city worker saw her fall to the ground and rushed her to an area hospital. At last check, the girl was still in critical condition. Police tell News 4 that she is improving and is expected to survive.
 
Barnes has been charged with armed violence and aggravated battery with a firearm. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
