IL doctor to be first orthopedic surgeon in space

CHICAGO (AP) -- A Chicago doctor will be the first orthopedic surgeon in space.

Dr. Robert "Bobby" Satcher blasts off on the Space Shuttle Atlantis next Monday. His five-million mile journey will take Satcher and other crew members to the international space station.

Once there, Satcher will use his surgical training in joint replacements to help repair two robotic arms on the station's exterior. And he'll be tweeting about his space experiences on Twitter.

Satcher is 44 and works at Northwestern Memorial and Children's Memorial hospitals. He also teaches at Northwestern University's medical school.

He'll go into space with five other astronauts for a 12-day mission.
