PARK HILLS, Mo. (AP) -- Two young women who got lost while hiking in the woods of an eastern Missouri state park are safe, thanks in part to modern technology.
St. Francois County Sheriff Dan Bullock told the Park Hills Daily Journal that the women began hiking about 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francois State Park. They were unable to find their way back to the trail before the sun went down, and had no flashlight.
The women called 911 and remained on the phone with a dispatcher for three hours while searchers looked for them. Authorities eventually got coordinates from the cell phone and used a GPS to find the women just after 8 p.m.
