Quinn calls early prisoner release necessary

CHICAGO (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn says inmates being released early to help the state deal with its budget problems will be monitored electronically so authorities can supervise them.

The state will be releasing about 1,000 prisoners in the coming weeks. Quinn says the early releases -- some up to a year early -- are necessary because of the state's financial troubles.

The governor tried to reassure people Tuesday that the inmates being released haven't committed violent crimes.

Quinn says the inmates hopefully learned their lessons in jail and won't return to criminal activity. But he acknowledges he'll catch heat if any early-release prisoners go astray and commit violent crimes.

Some police, prosecutors and crime victims have opposed the plan.
