(HockeyStL) -- St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong announced today that Alex Steen, 28, has been activated from the injured reserve, and will make his return Sunday night against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Steen has been sidelined the last 39 games with a concussion and participated in his first team practice, without a no contact jersey, on Saturday.

His return is a pleasant surprise for the Blues as Steen was expected to be out of the lineup for at least a few more games.

Steen has 13 goals and 11 assists this season with the Blues but has only played in 36 games this season and has been experiencing concussion-related symptoms since he was diagnosed with a concussion on December 27.

Defenseman Kris Russell will also make his return to the lineup tonight as expected.
