OPDYKE, Illinois -- A coroner in southern Illinois’ Jefferson County says a home that collapsed during a storm has killed one person and injured two others.
Eddie Jo Marks says the fatality happened Friday near the community of Opdyke. He says he had few other details and was en route to the scene.
The house collapse happened as storms producing large hail, heavy rains and tornadoes swept across southern and central Illinois.
Jackson County Emergency Management deputy coordinator Shawn Priddy says a tornado touched down briefly in rural areas around noon Friday, but he had no instant reports of damage.
The storm was being blamed for destroying a barn northeast of Elkville in Jackson County.
Officials also say that golf ball-size hail was reported in Coles and Effingham counties.
