ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A neighbor helped save a south city restaurant after it caught fire Thursday morning.
The fire happened at Lou Boccardi's Bar and Grill in the 5400 block of Magnolia Avenue around 3 a.m.
A neighbor told authorities they smelled smoke and called 911. That neighbor then went to the back of the restaurant and kicked in the door with intent to try an extinguish the fire, but the smoke was too thick.
Fire crews arrived on the scene a short time later. They entered the building and quickly extinguished the fire.
The fire was contained in the kitchen area, but that area suffered extensive damage.
A woman who appeared to be associated with the restaurant was on the scene talking with the fire department and was visibly upset.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have started in a freezer.
Nobody was in the establishment when the fire started.
No injuries were reported.
