Coroner's jury: Heart attack killed man in custody

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A coroner's jury in southwestern Illinois has ruled that a Granite City man who collapsed while in police custody died after suffering a heart attack."

The Belleville News-Democrat ( ) reports that the jury made that conclusion involving 56-year-old Shannon Walsh Sr. during a Madison County coroner's inquest Wednesday in Edwardsville.

Walsh collapsed on Jan. 19 after being arrested by Granite City police for driving with a suspended license and leading officers on a low-speed chase before surrendering. He died five days later.
An Illinois State Police investigation and the state's attorney's office found that the police committed no wrongdoing.

The newspaper reports that Walsh repeatedly had been involved with Granite City police and considered himself a sovereign citizen who didn't have to follow the law.
