MADISON COUNTY, Il. – Several local communities are not wasting any time to target the early arrival of mosquitoes and they are doing everything they can to fight the ones that might be carrying a disease.
The local area is four to six weeks ahead of schedule for mosquito-season because of the mild winter and the Madison County Health Department is already planning to distribute a tool to help reduce the population of the mosquito.
Under a state grant, the department purchased larvacide briquettes which will be dropped into catch basins or storm water to kill the mosquito larvae.
Mosquitoes associated with the West Nile Virus are expected to be on the rise as summer nears and the health department warns residents to use precautions. The precautions include emptying any containers or tires that may be in the yard and use insect repellent.
