O’FALLON, Illinois (KMOV) -- A community is concerned after a 15-year-old girl was attacked by two strangers while searching for her lost dog in O’Fallon, Illinois.
O'Fallon resident Tim Petterson says his daughter Haley was walking through the city cemetery behind her house when two girls attacked, leaving her brusied and with a black eye.
“It startled her ‘cause she didn’t even know they were there and they immediately grabbed her by the hair and started punching her in the face,” said Petterson.
The two girls ran away after some nearby neighbors turned on their outside lights.
“It’s the backyard, one house away. It’s scary, ya know? What’s next?” asked Petterson.
Police are downplaying the crime as a random act.
“There’s nothing that leads us to believe this is some kind of pattern of violence or anything of that nature,” said O’Fallon Police Sgt. Robert Schmidtke.
But Petterson said the whole neighborhood is now concerned.
“It’s almost like you can’t even go outside and search for your lost dog without worrying something’s going to happen,” Petterson said. “Generally speaking, we dont have a problem with that. We look at it almost as an isolated incident.”
If caught, police said the suspects will be charged.
Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the O’Fallon Police Department.
