Sharpton critical of voter ID efforts during St. Louis visit

ST. LOUIS -- The Rev. Al Sharpton is imploring blacks to do more to oppose voter identification proposals.

Sharpton was in St. Louis on Friday for an event hosted by Democratic Congressman William Lacy Clay aimed at raising awareness about laws in several states that would require voters to show a state-issued form of ID.

Republicans generally favor the proposals, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Sharpton calls the efforts an attempt to disenfranchise minority voters. And he was critical of blacks who he says are not doing enough to fight the voter ID measures.

Missouri voters in November will consider a constitutional amendment that could strengthen voter ID requirements, though the ballot issue is the target of a federal court challenge.
