Tamil lawmakers want UN pressure on Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Ethnic Tamil lawmakers in Sri Lanka have asked the United Nations Human Rights Council to press the government to investigate alleged wartime abuses and share power with the ethnic minority to prevent the country sliding back to violence.

Sri Lanka's civil war ended in 2009 after government troops crushed the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.

The United States intends to bring a resolution before the U.N. council urging the Sri Lankan government to investigate possible war crimes in the final stages of its civil war.

The leader of the Tamil National Alliance said Thursday he supports this proposed resolution and accused the government of reneging on all its previous assurances.

The government has arranged protests across the country against the resolution.
