CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri -- A southeast Missouri man who shot himself after assaulting a woman and leading police on a chase has died.
Cape Girardeau authorities say 43-year-old Sean M. Smith died Tuesday, a week after the chase and shooting.
Police say Smith allegedly assaulted a woman in a wooded area on March 4. Two days later, police spotted Smith who fled, prompting a chase. Police say when his vehicle was stopped and Smith was on the ground, he shot himself in the head.
The Southeast Missourian reports (http://bit.ly/zcrFYs ) Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said the investigation appears to be over, but he will review more police reports before officially ending the case.
