WASHINGTON COUNTY, Missouri (KMOV) – Authorities say several students are recovering after they were trapped inside an overturned school bus in southern Washington County Tuesday afternoon.
District officials said the bus carrying students in the Valley R-6 School District was traveling in Belgrade near the intersection of State Highway C and State Highway BB shortly after 3 p.m. when the accident occurred.

According to Sgt. Nothum with the Missouri Highway Patrol, the wreck happened after a student onboard the bus dropped an item behind the driver’s seat. When the student went to retrieve it, the driver, a substitute for the day, got distracted and crashed.
Authorities said three children – including 8- and 13-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl - were flown to a St. Louis hospital and are listed in satisfactory condition. Emily Moses , 7, was flown from Washington County Memorial Hospital to St. Louis Children's Hospital hours later and is condition.
Officials said eight additional students were transported by ground to Washington County Hospital. Their injuries ranged from minor lacerations to bone fractures. They have all been treated and released.
Authorities said the driver was not injured.
There were 35 students onboard the bus.
Officials said there are about 400 students in the small school district.
