CHICAGO (AP) -- Federal authorities say an Illinois state legislator has been arrested on bribery charges.
A news release from the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago says State Rep. Derrick Smith was arrested Tuesday and will appear in court later in the day.
The prosecutor's office accuses the 48-year-old Chicago Democrat of accepting a $7,000 cash bribe to write an official letter of support for a daycare center he believed was seeking a state grant. He is charged with one count of accepting a bribe.
A message seeking comment from Smith's Chicago office wasn't immediately returned.
The U.S. Attorney's release says Smith was appointed state representative for the 10th District last year and that he is a candidate for the General Assembly in next week's primary election.
