(KMOV) - Emergency rooms are not equipped for dental emergencies according to doctors, but the number of patients is increasing due to tough economic times. E-R’s treat for pain and infections but it is only temporary care.
When patients are treated for dental care, it causes longer waiting lines for those who are suffering other emergencies. The dental patients are then referred to federally qualified health clinics with dentists on staff who must wait several months to get an appointment.
From 2006 to 2009, the number of dental patients at the emergency room have increased 16% nationwide.
According to Dr. Joseph DeLucia of SLU Hospital, who sees three patients a day for dental reasons, the emergency room is not the place to go.
