(KMOV.com) -- An apartment building and a garge were destroyed and another home suffered minor damaged in a major fire that started Monday morning in East St. Louis.

According to reports, the fire started around 5:00 a.m. in a two-story apartment building at the corner of 22nd Street and Kansas Avenue, just off Highway 15.

News 4 photojournalist Steve Harris was on the scene during the most intense part of the fire.  He said the apartment building was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived and a nearby garage was smoking.  That garage eventually caught fire and was destroyed.

Smoke was seen coming from another nearby home, but firefighters were able to get water on it in time to prevent it from catching fire.  Although the home did not catch fire, it suffered minor damage due to the extreme heat from the nextdoor blaze.

Fire officials said crews were able to get the fire under control after two hours.  At this time, it is not known if the apartment building was occupied.  No injuries were reported.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is suspicious, but will not know for sure until they can conduct an investigation.

Initially, one fire truck was dispatched to the scene since other fire vehicles were being used at another area fire.
