(KMOV) – Investigators in Madison County are trying to determine if the death of missing man, found Friday morning in an Alton quarry was an accident.
Searchers from the sheriff's department and several Metro East municipalities joined in the ground search for Charles Roe, 36, of Godfrey. Missing since Wednesday, his pickup truck was found in a hospital parking lot along a quarry in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and College Avenue.
A News 4 photographer hovering over the scene in SkyZoom 4 Friday spotted what appeared to be a body along a wall in a difficult to reach area of the quarry.
Authorities recovered the body and it was later identified as Roe.
Family members reported Charles "Chad" Roe, 36, of Godfrey, Illinois missing on Wednesday. He had apparently left his home on Southwood Drive around 5 p.m. to go to church. It is unknown if he made it to the service.
Roe's abandoned 2009 GMC Canyon was found by investigators in the rear parking lot of St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton, Illinois. That is near the quarry that became the focus of the search on Friday.
