Monarch Restaurant closing in Maplewood

MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (KMOV) -- After nine years in Maplewood, the owners of Monarch Restaurant announced it will close next month.

"Unfortunately, the St. Louis dining population has been unable to adequately support a restaurant of our caliber and size, in our current location on a consistent basis. We have been looking at other options over the last year, and will be announcing future plans later this summer,” explained the owners in a press release.

Jeff Orbin and Aaron Teitelbaum say they are looking for a smaller location. The owners said the 10,000 square foot restaurant space in Maplewood was too large.

The restaurant has been an anchor in the on-going revival in Maplewood's business and entertainment district on Manchester Road.

Chef Josh Galliano was nominated for a James Beard Foundation award in the "Best Chef: Midwest" category.

"In some strange way it feels like Tony LaRussa leaving the Cardinals after a World Series win," said the owners in their press release.

Monarch closes March 11, 2012.
