(KMOV) – Police have two men in custody after they led police on a foot chase in north St. Louis County, Wednesday morning.

According to police, they first received a call at 1 a.m. from a witness who spotted a suspicious vehicle along US-67 just south of West Alton.

Police arrived at the scene and discovered a U-Haul truck and two men loading it with steel from nearby railroad tracks. When the men saw officers, they fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.

Police were able to catch one suspect a short time later with the use of the department helicopter.

The second suspect led police on a chase for more than an hour until he fell 50-75 feet off the edge of a cliff, near the Belle Fort Quarry.

Authorities began a rescue effort to quickly get the suspect to safety and in police custody.

The fallen suspect was conscious and talking when he was rescued. He was airlifted to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Authorities believe these men were going to sell the metal that they were stealing from the tracks.

Police are now looking into whether or not the U-Haul truck was stolen.
