EDWARDSVILLE, Il. (KMOV) – A student is questioned by police after bringing a hatchet to a local high school on Tuesday.
A female student at Alton High School was spotted showing-off the hatchet to other students around 12:30 p.m. Police say the student is cooperating and resource officers at the school state that no one was threatened or hurt during the incident.
Officers plan on determining the student’s intent and talking with school officials about any possible problems involving the student.
“To determine if someone else will be warned or at risk, I don’t necessarily know at this point in time. It is too early to make the assumption that this student had this hatchet with any kind of criminal intent in mind.”
The school has metal detectors, but police say they are only used at sporting events and similar occasions.
District administrators are working with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department to determine the appropriate response to the student’s actions.
