(BaseballStL) -- Skip Schumaker was one of the first of the regulars to arrive in Jupiter. Schumaker will be fighting for his job at second base this spring. He told me on Tuesday that he's always had to prove himself, so this camp will be nothing different.
Schumaker is battling Tyler Greene and Daniel Descalso for the second base job. Skip said that even if he wins the competition he doesn't expect to play much against lefthanded starting pitchers. Tony La Russa rarely let him hit against lefties.
His career batting average is just .210 against lefthanders in 366 at bats, so a best case scenario for Schumaker is likely a platoon role with the right-handed hitting Tyler Greene.
