(BaseballStL) -- Pitchers and catchers reported to camp today and took their physicals. Most took part in a very light and brief workout on the field, playing a little catch and doing some jogging.

Mike Matheny spoke to the assembled media before a practice for the first time. That was a Tony La Russa ritual before every spring workout, and Matheny says he'll do the same thing. Matheny has been here almost a week watching the pitchers who arrived early. Matheny says "It's been a very efficient camp. There's no standing around. We get in, get our work done and get them out of here."

Matheny was asked if he plans to keep 13 pitchers on the final roster and said that depends on the health of the starters. With Adam Wainwright coming off surgery and Chris Carpenter coming off a grueling 2011 season Matheny may decide to carry an extra pitcher as insurance.
