School district to build athletic fields a year after making job cuts

(KMOV) – A local school district is turning heads after deciding to build a new athletic field at a time when many school districts are searching for ways to save money.

The Francis Howell School District is spending almost $2.5 million for a new athletic and parents are questioning the move especially since the district had to cut teachers last year.

The school district could not put that money towards teacher salaries because it is from a bond issue that was approved in 2008.  The money has to be spent on capital improvements.

The athletic complex that was approved tonight will add two baseball fields, a softball field and a practice field for football.  In addition, the district filled ten elementary positions tonight for the fall.

News 4 has been told by officials that revenues are improving in the district and the financial outlook is looking better.
