HOMEWOOD, Ill. (AP) -- A man has drowned after apparently trying to rescue his dog from thin ice at a suburban Chicago park.
Homewood Fire Chief Robert Grabowski says crews responded to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve Monday and pulled an unconscious man about age 60 from the lake.
The man was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name wasn't immediately available.
Witness Dustin Neuliep of Chicago Heights says he called 911 after seeing two dogs wandering around -- one on a trail and one on the ice. He then spotted the dogs' leashes and a cane on the ice, and a hat and gloves in the water.
Neuliep says he was able to get the dog to leave the ice. Both of the victim's dogs were taken by firefighters.
