Illinois educators face tough choices with cuts in funding

(KMOV) -- Illinois educators are facing tough decisions one day after the State Board of Education announced drastic cuts in funding.

The areas hit the hardest are the gifted and after school programs. Reading programs and early childhood education are losing a third of their funding.

While the money is being cut, local districts say one thing that hasn't been cut are performance levels mandated by the federal no child left behind act.

At the high school level, other cuts include programs designed to keep at-risk kids in school as well as grants that help schools purchase books and materials for teachers.
